Call for Papers
The Journal of Korean Law invites the submission of original manuscripts for the August 2021 Issue (Vol. 20 No. 2).
The Journal of Korean Law is published twice annually, in February and August, by the Seoul National University Asia-Pacific Law Institute. It is the first law journal to be published in English by a Korean law school and is the most prestigious of its kind. We are proud to announce that it is the first and only law journal in English to be listed at the Korea Citation Index (KCI).
The Journal serves to introduce foreigners to current intellectual and practice-related trends in Korean law and to stimulate a comparative discourse with scholars and practitioners from all corners of the world. The Journal has a worldwide audience as all published articles are available on HeinOnline and Westlaw International, as well as our website.
The Journal requests that contributors kindly email their manuscripts to jkl@snu.ac.kr by Tuesday, June 15, 2021.
Before submitting your manuscript, please refer to the manuscript guidelines below for the basic formatting of an original manuscript and general information on the reviewing and editing process. Failure to meet these requirements may lead to a rejection of your submission. Editorial Policy
1. Guidelines for Original Manuscripts
(1) Cover Letter
All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter which should include all necessary contact information.
(2) General Formatting
The Journal strongly encourages contributors to prepare their manuscripts in Microsoft Word format. The manuscripts should be written in typical law journal style. They must be analytic and well- supported with citations to authority. Articles published in the Journal of Korean Law are generally twenty to forty pages in length. The Journal also encourages the use of gender-neutral language.
(3) Introduction of the Author, Abstract and Keywords
The name of the author, placed below the main title of the manuscript, should be accompanied by institutional affiliations of positions held by the author.
All manuscripts should include a brief abstract with the word count between 200 and 500 words. The abstract should be placed between the name of the author and beginning of the body text. It should describe concisely the purpose, methods, and argument of the study.
Up to ten keywords must be listed at the bottom of abstract to be used as index terms.
(4) Citation
(i) Citations in manuscripts should appear in footnotes, not endnotes, and follow The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (20th ed. 2015).
(ii) When citing Korean legal sources, please refer to the following guidelines, as outlined in the
Bluebook.
The Bluebook system requires that all non-English materials (books, articles, laws, cases, etc) must be transcribed in their original language, or by the standard romanization
system of each language, e.g. Daehanminguk Minbeob [Civil Code of the Republic of Korea]. Thus, we request all authors to provide us with this information if an original text is
cited. Also, we strongly urge all writers to provide citations in Korean or any other original language whenever possible.
Whenever the proper romanization of a Korean word is at question, please refer to the following links.

Some specific rules are as follows: (a) Korean statutes and codes
- Korean statutes and codes, when appearing for the first time in the citation, should be cited as
pronounced in Korean, followed by the proper English translation
Ex) MINBEOP [CIVIL CODE] art. 751.
- When a Korean statute or code has been fully cited previously, it is no longer necessary to provide the Korean pronunciation. It is sufficient to simply cite the English translation.
Ex) CIVIL CODE art. 754.
- When writing the Korean pronunciation, it is advised that the writer abide by the guidelines provided by the National Institute of the Korean Language (The guidelines are available at http://www.korean.go.kr/front_eng/roman/roman_01.do).
(b) Korean cases
- Please follow the examples below for the citation of Korean cases.

2. Publication & Copyright
Except for negotiated secondary publications, manuscripts submitted to the Journal must be previously unpublished and not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
All published manuscripts become the permanent property of Seoul National University Law Research Institute and may not be published elsewhere without written permission.
We regret that manuscripts cannot be returned.
3. Peer Review Process
All articles judged suitable for publication will be peer-reviewed in a blind process by three referees selected amongst prominent scholars and practitioners by the Faculty Editorial Board. Acceptance of the manuscript is decided, based on the critiques and recommended decision of the referees. If the manuscript passes through the peer review process, it is still subject to editing, cite-checking, and formatting by the student editors of the Journal prior to publication.
